Non-compliant Clothing

What to do when your outfit of choice doesn't co-operate? Think outside the box!

This is a dress. It simply cannot be worn as a dress because it is so static-prone. After unsuccessfully trying to wear it twice - once with bare legs and once with tights - it is now a tunic to be belted, pulled up a bit, and worn with jeans.

Details
Cardigan, belt, and tunic: Forever 21
Jeans: Guess by Marciano
Sunnies: Coach
Boots: Call it Spring
Bracelet:  J Crew
Nails:  c/o OPI "Lost My Bikini in Molokini"

I wore this for Easter. There was a ton of snow (still is...) but it looks deceptively spring-like on our front step!

Birthday Break

Thanks Mother Nature for waiting til the day AFTER my birthday to dump some more snow on us. How could a beautiful day like Saturday be followed by a blizzard?

I'm getting so violently sick of winter clothes right now. Anyone with me?

Tuesday Treasures: Nail Polish Fit for a Bride

This week on Tuesday Treasures, I'd like some wedding advice! It will be very hard for me not to do something bold on my nails for my wedding, as I'm not a neutral nails girl by nature. However, I don't want to be looking at photos 25 years from now and questioning my choice of nail art. I think I'd better stick to classic on this one.

Pick your treasure! What's your favorite neutral wedding-appropriate nail color? Brides of the past, I want to know what YOU wore on your big day!

My pick: OPI Glints of Glinda from the Oz the Great and Powerful collection.

I love this as much as I can love a neutral polish, but I know myself, and I know I'm going to want something new for the wedding. There are a few shades in the new OPI Muppet Collection that look promising - I Love Applause and Chillin' Like a Villain.

Brazil by OPI

Halifax in February doesn't exactly conjure up images of a summer carnival, but we'll take any distraction we can get. Paint me warm, pretty please?

I had to throw my cute Valentine's Day card in there.

The wonderful staff at The Summit  invited me to the launch of the spring/summer OPI polish collection - Brazil. The colors were a great balance of brights and neutrals. Although I couldn't bring myself to fully commit to a full-on summer mani in minus five degree temperatures, I did have a tiny accent nail in a summer bright!

It was hard to choose from all the great colors, but I went for Taupe-less Beach with an accent nail in Live.Love.Carnival.

The Summit was a fabulous experience - relaxing and fun. I was sent home with a mini polish in Amazon...Amazoff that I can't wait to try on. It looks so pretty!

Thanks again to The Summit for inviting me!

Gwen Stefani for OPI

Just in time to perk me up from the winter blahs, I got an e-mail from The Summit on Spring Garden Road inviting me to the launch of the new Gwen Stefani for OPI nail polish collection.

It was so hard to choose my manicure, as all of the colors looked amazing. I finally decided on gold (Love.Angel.Music.Baby) with a black accent nail (4 in the Morning). No top coat needed!

Indoor lighting

The finishes on these shades are very unique. Love.Angel.Music.Baby is a gorgeous matte gold. It looks like it would be gritty to touch, but it's actually very smooth. I keep wanting to change the name of this polish to Rich Girl though...

The finish on 4 in the Morning looks like smooth matte leather. Apparently when you add a topcoat (which is not how the polishes were designed to wear), you can see tiny gold flecks in it.

Susan (spa owner) was a pleasure to chat with during my mini manicure and the attendees left with a mini polish to try at home. I got Hey Baby- a  creamy hot pink. I feel like I already have a few polishes similar to this one, but a girl really can't have too much pink, can she?

Thanks to The Summit for having me!

Little Loves Lately 28.08.13

Welcome to another installment of the simple things that have been making me happy lately. Happiest of all is starting initial wedding plans. No date or venue is set yet, but I did try on a few dresses and it was SO much fun.

I've been scoring great finds at The Body Shop, and I am in LOVE with this hand lotion. It smells so good and sinks into the skin quickly.

The Body Shop Almond Hand & Nail Cream

Lawtons is the greatest store for marking down beauty products. I scored a mini-set of OPI polishes from the Oz The Great and Powerful line for $4.99 a few weeks ago. Lately I've been liking more neutral tones on my nails, which is shocking since I am usually the queen of crazy when it comes to polish choices.

There were four sheer shades and one liquid sand in the collection.

What Wizardry is This?

This was my first experience with liquid sand. The texture looks great (it's on my toes right now) but I'm a bit worried it will be hard to remove.
I Theodora You
A very pretty soft pink. I used two coats, but I think three coats would look best. It was still a bit see-thru.
Don't Burst my Bubble
This is the only one I haven't tried yet. It's an off-white color that will probably need a lot of coats and I haven't had the time to experiment with it.
Glints of Glinda
I think this one is my favorite of the bunch. It doesn't look like much in the bottle, but on the nails, it's a pretty beigey/champagne color

How happy was I to get a great deal on hand soap? R and I stopped at Bath and Body Works a few weeks ago and they had their hand soaps on 10 for $30. Then I asked at the cash if there were any email promos on, and there was a $10 off any $30 purchase. Brilliant!

Ten new smells to add to the six that already live in my bathroom cupboard! My favorite scents of this recent haul are Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin (with a cute Halloween bottle), Sugar Maple, and Vanilla Buttercream. Can you tell I have a sweet tooth???

Sharpen the Pencils

It's Friday! I don't know about you, but all the fall clothes in stores and on-line are making me wish I had a good excuse to go shopping.

There are many perks to being a grown up (cars, legal wine drinking, and no homework) but something about almost-September gives me an ache for back-to-class... but only for the first day, to see how cute your crush got over the summer and to scope out what everyone is wearing.

Teacher's Pet

Topshop grey top / H&M black zipper skirt, $20 / Dolce & Gabbana black ballet flat, $415 / Marc by Marc Jacobs messenger bag, $550 / TWIST'N'SCOUT beaded jewellery / Betsey Johnson pink jewelry / OPI nail polish

I am linking with longdistanceloving on this fabulous Friday for a post on back-to-school fashion.

Oh how I need a new pair of black flats! Seriously, the heel fell off and they're looking rather shabby. Any recommendations? I don't mind spending a bit more, because I wear black flats a lot! The pair that died lasted me four years (thank you Franco Sarto).

Not Too Tall

What do you do when you're wearing heels that make you taller than your boyfriend (oops) and you're leaving town for a wedding?

Impromptu trip to the mall!

Details:
Dress: Envy (Halifax)
Shoes: Call it Spring (Halifax)
Bracelet: borrowed from mom
Sunnies: Coach (TJ Maxx, South Portland)
Earrings: Gap Factory Outlet (Las Vegas)

I scored a cute pair of shoes for $15 (thank you summer sales) and no matter how pretty my first-choice five inch heels are.... I was soooo glad by the end of the night that I wasn't rocking the skyscrapers.

One more wedding to go to this weekand, then we're done until late September. Weddings and the associated activities are great for outfit posting.... but the best thing about them is seeing your newlywed friends so happy (and the cake, let's not forget the cake).  I love all the love!

Rain? Check.

I have a closet full (seriously... overflowing) with cute summer things.

I wish I could wear them.

Weekday weather has been (mostly) beautiful lately. Then the weekend comes and the rain sets in.

Details:
Cardigan: Joe Fresh (Halifax)
Tee: French Connection (Toronto)
Tank and earrings: Le Chateau (Halifax)
Jeans: Guess by Marciano (Vancouver)
Shoes: Miz Mooz (Town Shoes, Toronto)
Bag: Coach (gift)
Bracelet: boutique in Newfoundland
Long Necklace: Forever 21 (LA)
Short Necklace: American Eagle Outfitters (Halifax)
Hat: Element (late but great Margolians, Truro)

Since joining Pinterest, I've been spending far too much time looking at/trying new nailpolish techniques. Evidence below.

Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtremewear in Fuchsia Power, Ocean nail laquer in White Opal, OPI Glitter Topcoat in Nutcracker Sweet

Use the button near the top right of my page to follow me on Pinterest! I'd love to see what all of you have on your boards.

Open Knit

How to look sort-of summery in cooler-than-normal temperatures but still keep the cozy factor.

Try wearing open knit.

Details:
Sweater: Gap Factory Outlet (Wrentham)
Jeans and Necklace: American Eagle Outfitters (Halifax)
Shoes: Franco Sarto (Town Shoes, Toronto)
Scarf: the late and great Margolians (Truro)
Bracelet: gift
Sunglasses: Coach (TJ Maxx, South Portland)

Then when the wind picks up throw on a leather jacket. Aren't you just so jealous of June weather in Nova Scotia? To be fair, it's not always like this. I'll be bathed in sweat in July and wishing for a cool breeze.

Jacket: Danier (Halifax)

I was in one of those moods where traditional nails weren't going to satisfy me... (I blame Pinterest)

Had a very hard time trying to get my thumbs at the proper angle...
OPI in shade unknown (one of the minis) and NYC in Skin Tight Denim. Thumbs dotted with Finger Paints in Hip Hip Hue Ray

The Outfit Post that Almost Wasn't

Disclaimer: Almost no effort was taken in the creation of this outfit.

This photo was taken on Sunday, and I wasn't even going to do an outfit post, but it was such a nice day....

Outfit would be yawn-city without the pops of pink, right?

Details:
Shirt: Lucky Brand (Toronto)
Jeans: American Eagle (Halifax)
Scarf: The late and great Margolians (Truro)
Bracelet: A booth on the main drag at Huntington Beach, California
Sneakers: Converse (Las Vegas)
Earrings: What on Earth (Dartmouth)
Necklace: Forever 21 (LA)

I saw a picture in a magazine of black nails with gold sparkle tips, so I decided to try purple nails with turquoise tips. Next time, I'd do a narrower strip of sparkle.

Novel-Tea: Part 4

This isn't a novel, so I know it's going against my novel-tea rules. What it is - a freaking funny and eclectic jumble of musings from my favorite talk show host ever. Ellen!

I love her show, and when I was unemployed for several months last year trying to finish my novel, almost every day I'd watch her show in the morning from 10-11 and then write. Now that I've joined the workforce again, I DVR her. I love her dancing, pranks, and surprises.... especially when she helps those who are facing troubled times.

I've never paid attention to who I hear in my head when I read. Throughout this book, I heard Ellen's voice, like she was reading the book to me. It was a nice distraction from hearing my own voice, which is how I normally read. I don't make up voices in my head unless I KNOW the voice. Speaking of...was anyone else soooo relieved to finally hear the first time someone said "Hermione" in the Harry Potter movies? Did anyone else call her Her-me-own?

Did you find that last paragraph annoying? If so, you might not like this book, because it's written as if someone crawled inside Ellen's head with a computer and just started typing the contents in random order. It's all over the place, but I really liked it, and I think most people would. It made me laugh out loud more than a few times.

I wanted to pick a tea that was bright and uplifting to match Ellen's spirit. I needed some black tea for when I require a caffeine boost. Lately I've been tending towards herbals and rooibos which are sans caffeine.

Meet Paridise Found from DavidsTea.

It's so pretty!

I've only had it hot, but can't wait to try it iced.

The color on my nails is OPI -  Hopelessly in Love.

The weather in Halifax was CRAZY HOT this week. We had two glorious days that shattered all temperature records. Do you know what I feel compelled to do when I'm faced with 27 degree weather in March?

Buy something summery.

So I did.

American Eagle skinny jeans

However, it's now back to normal here (cold).... so stay tuned for the next heat wave to see how I incorporate colored denim into my wardrobe. Thanks for the tease Mother Nature.
