Night Out: Legally Blonde

Lucky me! I scored an invite to the Opening Night and "sorority after party" for Neptune Theatre's production of Legally Blonde: The Musical on April 5.

The show was hilarious! It started off with so much energy and was able to maintain the excitement throughout the whole night. The acting was phenomenal, the costumes were fun, and the specialty martini I had at intermission was one of the best drinks I've ever had the pleasure of sipping (a french martini in case you're wondering).

Details
Blazer: Ann Taylor (Wrentham)
Top: Joe Fresh (Halifax)
Shorts: H&M (Dartmouth)
Boots: Le Chateau (Halifax)
Bracelet: Club Monaco
Necklace: Forever 21 (San Francisco)
Earrings: Gap (Las Vegas)

I struggled with the pink or no pink dilemma. Of course I wanted to rock the color of the night, but the one bright pink sweater I own didn't seem dressy enough for the venue. I saved the pink for my nails and hoped they stood out enough!

This was my first time wearing these shorts, and I love how multi-seasonal they are - great with tights now and bare legs in the summer.

The after party was a blast. There was a ton of food, more yummy drinks, a wacky photo opportunity, and a chance to mingle with the cast.

I spent a good part of the night chatting with one of my favorite bloggers Kayla from Short Presents. Check out her post to see a crazy shot of us!

A big thanks to my friends at Line Magazine for hooking me up with the tickets. If you haven't seen a copy of Line yet, you can pick one up for free in Halifax. Watch for it!

The Umbrella

Are you an umbrella person?

For me, it depends on where I am. When I lived in Vancouver, umbrellas were essential and functional. The nice thing about Vancouver is that when it rains, it rains vertically. You have an umbrella - you don't get wet. Here in Halifax, rain tends to fall horizontally due to the wind, and umbrellas often die tragically via broken bones (ok... broken spokes).

Blazer: Banana Republic (via Crimson Clover Boutique, Halifax)
Jeans: Old Navy (Halifax)
Shoes: Franco Sarto (Town Shoes, Toronto)
Tee: Smart Set (Halifax)
Bubble Necklace: Etsy
Umbrella: Borrowed from Amanda Brownhill Photography

When I was a teenager, I'd often go for long walks with my friend during hot summer rains,  and not even bother to try to avoid a drenching. As an adult, the novelty of being soaked has worn off - I'd rather be dry!

I'm linked with longdistanceloving today for an April Showers theme post.

Do you like the rain?

The Neutral Trench

Right near the top of my list of must-have items for a functional wardrobe is a neutral trench. Someday I might be lucky enough to score a Burberry one, but for years this Gap one has done a great job of topping off many a spring and fall outfit of mine.

Photos by Amanda Brownhill Photography

 Details
Trench coat: Gap (sooooo old but sooooo good)
Top: Old Navy (Halifax)
Skirt: Club Monaco (Halifax)
Shoes: Miz Mooz (Town Shoes,Toronto)
Necklace: Paddy's Market (Sydney, AU)
Earrings: What on Earth (Dartmouth)

Lately I've been craving a new spring coat. Not that I'd ever replace this one, but I feel the need for something new to throw into the mix. Maybe a short trench.

Has anyone seen a coat or jacket they love?

Styled by Erin

For my birthday last month, my BFF sent me an amazing present! This picture was taped to the card.

I had to laugh at her title for the picture. Moms can still be trendy and stylish!

She basically provided me with an outfit post, and I think she did a great job. I forgot to hold my Coach wallet though.... sorry BFF.

Details
Top and Scarf: gifts from Winners, Toronto
Jeans and Shoes: Old Navy (Halifax)
Sunnies: Guess (TJ Maxx, South Portland)
Bracelets: Suzy Shier, Old Navy, Forever 21, and the owl one was part of my gift

Nails are Sally Hansen Pacific Blue
Thanks so much for the outfit idea BFF. She knows my style.... how could she not? When I visit Toronto we spend many hours in full-on shopping mode.

Sunday Currently 04/21/13

I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend. I'm linking with siddathornton today for Sunday Currently.

reading On my Kobo: The Book Thief. Excellent so far! I also picked up a book on fashion blogging from the library, which I intend to crack open today.
writing Three blog posts to get me through this week... it's a busy one socially!
listening "The World of Bob Marley" playlist on Songza. Putting me in the mood for Jamaica in 20 days!
thinking How I wish the weekend was one more day longer....
smelling Faintly, the Orange Sanguine perfume I put on this morning and the chili that's cooking in my slow cooker
wishing That one of my dearest friends wasn't going through such a hard time right now. xo
hoping For a little bit of luck soon in securing a permanent job at my current workplace. Fingers crossed!
wearing Colored jeans, a printed shirt, an infinity scarf, slippers, and too many bracelets to be typing with (just removed them)
loving My new jeans. Value Village. Seriously. Joe's Jeans. $9.99. Had no idea they carried high end. May have to visit Value Village ALL THE TIME now.
wanting  Liposuction.... or maybe just need to take the time to self-tan my lower half. Until it's warm outside, I usually just do above the belt. I went shopping for bikini bottoms today. Tan fat looks better than white fat.
needing To get an oil change this week.

Flashback: Neon

Me and neon go waaaay back. I'm going to guess that around 1990, there was a year of my life when I was wearing neon every day. If you took a peek into my closet, you'd have found:

  • Black bicycle shorts with neon side stripes
  • Neon socks (I'd wear a different color on each foot)
  • A Sun Ice ski jacket (I don't ski). It was full-on neon. Pink, orange, and yellow.
  • Neon scrunchies and banana clips
  • Those skinny rubber bracelets
  • Too many NKOTB t-shirts (one even had neon lettering)

I was over saturated with neon.

The result.... I'm not really embracing its comeback due to past overexposure - until I found this bag.

Isn't it a perfect pop of neon without being too much? I love that it's yellow! Since I don't like how yellow looks on me for clothes, I can now wear it in an accessory.

Details
Jacket: Gap (ancient... maybe not from 1990 but dangerously close). Gap lasts.
Tee: Joe Fresh (Halifax)
Jeans: 7 for All Mankind (Century 21, NYC)
Shoes: Miz Mooz (Town Shoes, Toronto)
Necklace: Random New Zealand find
Bag: Gap (sale section $13.99)

Do you have any nostalgia for neon? Do you like it for 2013?

Four Layered

Sorry, this post isn't about cake or trifle... darn.

The four layers I'm referring to is how we must dress in Nova Scotia this time of year. All four are needed most of the day. Sometimes, after 3:00 p.m. the scarf and jacket are negotiable.

Details
Jacket: Danier (Halifax)
Jeans: Guess by Marciano (Vancouver)
Tee: Forever 21 (Vancouver)
Scarf: Joe Fresh (Halifax)
Chambray shirt: Gap (Halifax)
Booties: Gap Factory Store (Halifax)
Bracelet: random store in Fiji

Excuse the lack of effort in the hairstyle.... it was the day before I visited the salon and I honestly couldn't be bothered.

I must admit, I'm so used to layering the heck out of all my outfits that when the summer hits and it's really hot, I may find a simple sundress too boring!

What's the layering piece for spring that you can't do without?

Matchy Matchy

Tan hat - check.  Tan jacket - check. Tan boots- check. Jeep - check. Animal print - check.

This was not a safari day, and there were no giraffe sightings I'm afraid.

Details
Blazer: Banana Republic Factory Store (Dartmouth)
Shirt and hat: Joe Fresh (Halifax)
Jeans: Aeropostale (Halifax)
Boots: Gap Factory Store (Halifax)
Belt: Gap (Halifax)
Necklace: Forever 21 (San Francisco)

This outfit is way more matchy than I usually go for. In fact, if I wear some version of this again, I'll take away one of the tan items.

Do you like to match or do you like to mix it up?

Coachella Kicks

Every year I have a love-hate relationship with Coachella - I love the idea of being there and then hate myself for not going.

I can list so many reasons I should be there this year:
1) Such a great excuse for buying a really cute outfit
2) One of my dearest friends is a complete pro at Coachella and would be the best person to go with
3) My favorite band in the entire universe (including all those indie bands on Uranus) is headlining.   Red Hot Chili Peppers.
4) I need a vacation (ok, Jamaica is a month away, but I'd like one now too)

So instead of actually going, I've created an outfit board, which was practically as fun (um, no).

Coachella Kicks

If this board looks a little crazy, it's because I started off with a nautical-themed outfit, changed my mind to festival wear, and then was too lazy to switch the jewelry. There are starfish in the desert, right?

I'm linked up with longdistanceloving today for Friday's Fancies with a shoe theme. Converse are my favorite footwear! I wear them so much!

Are you going to Coachella? Send me a post-card. *SOB*

New and Old

Confession.

A lot of clothes I wear are not new. Shhhhh...

Details
Top: Random find in NYC (2008)
Jeans: American Eagle Outfitters (2010)
Boots: Call it Spring ( maybe 2010...)
Wristlet: Coach (2011)
Bracelet: Random find in St. John's
Necklace: Forever 21 (2011)

Sometimes I feel pressure to always have new stuff. I also have pressure to make a mortgage payment and buy groceries, thus, new stuff can't always happen to the extent I'd like it to.

Today was one of those days when I felt I needed a treat (or four) so I bought a pair of teal tights at Joe Fresh ($1.94), some Olay face serum  (clearance $13.00), a Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Rendezvous ($8.49), and a hair donut ($3.99). I WILL master the sock bun (a year too late...)

Soon I'll do a product post on things I've tried and liked so far this year. I can't wait to try the lip stain!

Little Fixes

Fellow bloggers,

You know that one little thing that bugs you about a photo? The thing you can't really see when you look on the camera screen but you can see once you get the pictures on the computer? It's annoying, but not worth throwing out the outfit post?

See my scarf?

I want that little space between the layers closed.

Details
Shirt: Gap (ancient... like probably ten years old)
Jeans: Joe Fresh (Halifax)
Shoes: Gap Factory Store (Halifax)
Tank: Garage (Vancouver)
Necklace: Forever 21 (LA)
Scarf: Smart Set (Halifax)

The season finale of The Carrie Diaries is tomorrow night! I really like the show and am crossing my fingers that it doesn't get cancelled (apparently it's on the "maybe" list). The music is fabulous, the outfits are fun, and it's got some good side stories too - gotta love Dorrit and her new man!

Oversized Chevron

Lately I've been feeling a more casual vibe when it comes to what I'm wearing. It's a phase I'll embrace because it's so blissfully comfortable. Now that the snow is almost gone... see just the tiny slice of it in the background... I'm sure these wedge sneakers will be in high rotation.

Details
Sweater: Kismet via Bootlegger (Halifax)
Jeans: Calvin Klein (Costco, Halifax)
Sneakers: Skechers (The Shoe Company, Halifax)
Bracelets: Suzy Shier Forever 21

I picked up a few bracelets at Suzy Shier the other day for 40% off. Do you see the little skulls? My nails are Sally Hansen in Mint Sorbet.

I've been slacking with my Plinky writing prompts and haven't done one in a few weeks.

What activity, task, or game brings out your competitive streak and why?

I'm not much for competitive sports. Little league baseball was my sport for a few years as a kid, and I did intramural volleyball in junior high. As an adult, I stay active by doing independent fitness.

I wasn't a terrible athlete, but I wasn't great either - I was better at academics than sports. I didn't develop that competitive streak, where all you can focus on is the game and winning it. I was content to watch from the sidelines and cheer on my friends.

For some strange reason, there is one specific activity that brings out the fire in me. Mini golf.

I'm not a golfer, but my dad is and I've probably inherited some little bit of natural talent from him. I get excited when I play mini-golf and see those little set-ups with the slopes and tunnels and all the walls I could potentially rebound off of. Once someone suggested that we not keep score. Imagine! Of course score must be kept - and mine will be the highest.

Hitting Refresh

No matter how much you enjoy your job, it's so important to take time off to relax. I'm on day five of five days off and it's been a chance to catch up on some reading, sleeping, and cooking (I like to keep the freezer stocked with single servings for lunches). There was also a lot of time spent with family and friends, and I managed to get some blog posts done in advance. After today, it's five weeks of work then a little jaunt to Jamaica!

Details
Cardigan: Forever 21 (San Francisco)
Shirt (dragonfly pattern if you can't see): Zara (San Francisco)
Jeans: Guess (Moments, Truro)
Boots: Call it Spring (Halifax)
Belt and bracelets: Gifts
Circle Scarf: American Apparel (Halifax)

Aren't these bracelets fun??

The one on the left is from my best friend in Ontario and the one on the right is from my other best friend in Newfoundland (the bracelet was bought in Ecuador).

I hope everyone had a great long weekend!
