Season Specific

I've finally figured out why I pondered the purchase of this top for far too long in the Winners dressing room. A great deal of my wardrobe is multi-seasonal. I like lightweight pants that can be worn alone in the summer or with high boots in the winter when it's more chilly. I also adore thinner sweaters that can be worn year round.

This top, while super pretty, is most certainly spring/summer only! I wore this today to brunch at Moxies with the hubby. FYI: the chipotle chicken quesedilla was so yummy.

Mrs Picky Pants

Sometimes it's just necessary to be picky about certain things - like life partners,  ketchup, and culottes. After ordering and returning a laughable pair of the cropped wide leg bottoms from Zara, I happened upon these on sale at Envy. They are so roomy and comfortable.

I'm still thinking about getting them hemmed a few inches higher. What do you think? For those of you who don't know, I'm only 5'3''.

This fall, I plan on wearing these a lot with heeled boots or booties and maybe adding a bold sock.

Last Swing at Summer Style

As hard as it is to face, and as many years passed back-to-school as some of us are, September will always bring about fall clothing. I'm not ready for autumnal style quite yet, but I know the transition is going to start within the next few weeks.

Last Swing at Summer Style

Topshop top, 46 CAD / Unique high waisted leather shorts, 370 CAD / Topshop black ankle bootie, 170 CAD / Maison Margiela tassel purse / Tory Burch scratch resistant sunglasses, 195 CAD / Tory Burch palette eyeshadow, 79 CAD / Tarte moisturizing lipstick, 22 CAD / Essie peach nail polish, 11 CAD

TopShop has some fabulous things in store and on-line this season, including the shorts, sweater, and boots above. I'll be wearing my own brown faux leather shorts bare-legged for as long as possible, and then I'll throw some tights under them. Summer is still getting some attention via the nail polish, pink tinted shades, and punchy lip color. Not to compete with the bright lips, I picked a lovely neutral eye palette to finish the look.

When does your sartorial brain switch to fall fashion?

The Heat is On

Thanks to a self tanning mishap last evening which needs to be evened out, the dress I panned to wear was swapped out this morning for pants. I cringed at the thought of not having my built-in AC (via dress) on what was one of the hottest days of the year, but these pants were surprisingly cool.

I've had this lacey top for ages but only started wearing it a lot quite recently. It goes with almost everything!

Sunday Right Now: 08.16.15

Reading: Glamour's September issue (yay for September issues - always the best!). Faking It by Cora Carmack is my current novel on the Kobo. I really enjoyed the last book I read by her - this one is good so far too. I just finished The Knockoff by Lucy Sykes and Jo Piazza which was a fun read - sort of The Devil Wears Prada-ish.  I've been reading quite a bit lately and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few, but I also read Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll and have been peeking at a Scottsdale travel guide. I've been reading more on my Kobo lately as the treadmill and I have become friends again and it's much easier to tap pages on the Kobo than flip a real page while walking on a steep incline.

Writing: Less blog posts. Not for any particular reason except I've been lazy when it comes to making time to get outfit shots. Or we've been flying out the door in a rush. I've been wearing some cute stuff to work lately too and not bothering to click a photo. Must make more effort.

Clicking: Who What Wear, Instyle. I've been watching more beauty vlogs lately, and I want to mention a local one in particular, Girl Met Blush, who I happened to bump into last week and recognized her from watching her videos. She's super sweet and has a make-up collection that is unbelievable.

Seeing: Clear blue sky and green fairway. Suppertime tends to get slower on the golf course.

Smelling: Sunscreen which I dutifully applied today before we headed out for a drive. I've been experimenting with sunscreens lately and am quite fond of the one I tried today which was a foam.

Feeling: Hopeful. I am finally seeing changes in my body after consulting with a naturopathic Dr and making major changes to my eating habits. I might do a dedicated post on what I'm doing sometime soon, but let's just say it was scary how many carbs I was consuming before I realized how badly they were affecting me!

Watching: R and I are on Season 2 of Homeland (we watch pretty slowly). I'm also watching Bachelor in Paradise, I Am Cait, PLL (ohhhh how confused was I during the finale....), and we need to get the last season of Modern Family watched before the new shows start!

Wearing: White shorts, pink tank top, minimal jewelry. It's hot here today.

Hearing: 2015 Summer Dance Party on Songza

Anticipating: Getting through the next two weeks at work. We're down half of our group which means I'm in coverage mode every single day. I can do it!

Here's a few shots of the Oaklawn Farm Zoo from back in July on our vacation.

Muted and Matchy

Is it me or do my shoes, pants, stripes and hair all match here?

Gone is the red hair... or should I say, muted?

Not that I didn't like the red, but I was seriously missing my blond locks. I'm starting the slow transition back, via blond foils on top of faded red.

With pride, I'll share that this outfit survived a BBQ with a million (ok, like 13) children with not a smear on it! If your asking why I wasn't wearing heels with this, now you know the answer. Situational comfort in play!

Accessorized

I was eyeing this dress for a long time at Joe Fresh, and I grabbed it on clearance last month. The only thing that made me hesitate about it was that when I tried it on in the dressing room, it kinda sorta looked like a nightie. Sometimes you need to lay the accessories on with a heavy hand, just so it's certain you didn't get caught sleepwalking.

Hopefully I can come up with some other combinations to make this dress look different the next time I wear it.

Point Pleasant

When the universe gives you three days of sun after a long stretch of blah weather, you just can't help but be outside all of the time! R and I took a walk through Point Pleasant Park last weekend, and it was gorgeous. Sometimes I forget how lovely the parks are around here. We spent a long time staring at the sailboats on the water and wishing we were out on one!

We ended up walking farther than expected, so I was glad I wore my Chucks instead of the sandals I nearly donned. I'm finally getting a bit better at allowing myself to wear these shoes. They were my "second" wedding shoe (worn to the after party) so I'm a bit sentimental about them. Actually, I'm pretty emotional about all of my Chucks. The Converse outlet is right up there on my list of favourite places ever.

Waiting for What

One of the things I'm guilty of (besides watching PLL and occasionally eating frosting straight out of the jar) is hoarding outfits. As soon as I bought this vest (many months ago) I wanted to style it with this dress. But yet, I waited til August to do so. I still have many summer outfits I want to wear, but with less than a month of real summer left, I better get to them! What am I waiting for?

I wore this to the Halifax waterfront on Monday for the buskers festival. Our long weekend was so sunny and amazing!

My Monthly Purchases: July 2015

Every month, I break down my clothing expenses and share them. I used to have a monthly budget, but partway through 2014, I switched to a quarterly budget of $500. This can be rolled into the next quarter if it's not all spent. My goal is to keep my out of pocket expenses within $2000 a year. Gifts and gift cards don't count towards my budget.

Jeans: Gap
Reg $80 on sale for $26

It's always nice to add a new wash into the rotation. These jeans are much lighter than any that I own, are soft, and keep their shape well.

Shorts: Gap
Reg $55 on sale for $14.50
After getting sunless tanner on my white Joe Fresh shorts last year, I needed a new pair. These have a frayed hem but can be rolled up as well. They're in the wash - no photo for you.

Boots: Hunter
Reg $170 on sale for $50
I've always liked Hunters but balked at the price. I was randomly browsing around on the Town Shoes website a few weeks ago and stumbled across these. The price was too good to pass up, and I needed new wellies. You can't even get them this cheap second hand! I've worn them already and they are great! Kind of a strange summer purchase, but now I won't need to spend any time looking for them on the fall.

Shoes: Franco Sarto
Reg $125 on sale for $37
My Le Chateau black pumps kicked the bucket. My last Franco Sartos lasted five years, so when I saw these on the Town Shoes website the same day I saw my Hunters, I knew I had to order them. They are narrow enough to stay on my skinny foot, and I love the metal detail on the heel.

Pants: Aritzia
Reg $110 on sale for $55
This were a whim purchase while I was out shopping with my mom. They're more yellow-ish in real life than this photo suggests. They can be rolled or left longer, but I like the look of the roll. A great work or weekend pant.

Necklace: Banana Republic
Reg $50 on sale for $11.50
This necklace was bought with a special person in mind who recently passed on. RIP J. It's on high rotation.

Sweater: Club Monaco
Reg $80 on sale for $11.50
I swear, I like the mens' section in Club almost as much as the ladies' section. This is a beautiful lightweight summer sweater and I need more orange in my life. Can't get over the price! I definitely need to remember to shop the other side of the store more often! The color is really distorted in this photo, and I didn't notice til I saw the photo on the computer. My bedding is navy blue, and the sweater is actually a rusty orange color - not tangerine!

Top: BCBG via Winners
Reg $240 on sale for $23
Granted, this is a bit more busy than I usually enjoy for a pattern, but this is a seriously pretty top that will look great on it's own or layered under a blazer.

Original value of items: $910
I paid:  $228.50
I saved 75%

I spent more of my quarterly budget than I intended, but considering I have nearly $1000 worth of items, I'm ok with that. I'm still playing around with a bit of extra birthday money from March, so I'm rolling forward $392 to spend on the rest of the quarter.

Next are a few items that are outside of my budget.

Sneakers: Asics via Aerobics First
Reg $120, I paid $70 as I had a gift card for $50.
I finally bought new workout sneakers. It's difficult for me to find sneakers that don't leave my skinny feet rattling around in them. These are a great cross trainer for my Beachbody workouts.

Dress: Joe Fresh
Reg $34 on sale for $10
I'd seen a few other bloggers style this cute dress so nicely, and I waited for it to get marked way down. I think it'll look cute on it's own, under a white blazer or denim jacket, and perhaps over jeans or leggings too.
