I'm Done With You: August 2016

I'm trying out a new type of post, which I hope will also be helpful to me. You see, I have the bad habit of collecting too many products. I'll be halfway done a product I actually like but will buy another product of the same type because I "just need to try it". The problem is, I won't finish the first product, so then I end up with ten concealers. And then I cry... and then I need more concealer. Just kidding!

I'm sharing with you the products that I've finished, and I'll let you know if I like them enough to repurchase. I'll also throw in some products that are not finished, but I'm not using, so to the bin they go!

First up is Bath & Body Works. I'm sure I will always have a good portion of my empties from this brand because we use their hand soaps and candles all the time.

The hand soaps we recently used up were all ones we liked. I find with hand soaps, you generally always like them because you can smell them in the store and they usually translate into the same smell on your hands. We like the foaming ones better than the gel type, EXCEPT in the kitchen I like the gel better. I also used up a shower gel (Ocean Melon and Mango) which was really great smelling. The candle (Peach Bellini) was fantastic and really threw the scent well. Sometimes I love the smell of candles but find that the scent doesn't travel far enough through the house. 

The Dove antiperspirant I was not a fan of. I used it for a few days and then went back to my usual which is Secret (the click up gel in either vanilla or cocoa butter). The Bioderma micelle solution is THE BEST makeup remover I have ever tried (Thank you Sara at Girl Met Blush who always helps me with my SDM hauls!) I have several other types of make up remover I need to use up before I open my second bottle of Bioderma, but I doubt I will like the others more. The Bare Minerals Skin Longevity is a serum sample I think I got as a 100 point reward at Sephora. It was nice, but not life changing. However in reading some reviews on the Sephora website, people are saying you have to use it for a few weeks before you notice how it's working for you.  The Body Shop lip product is barely used. I just didn't like how it felt on my lips. 

The Make Up Forever HD foundation is empty despite how it looks. I really love this foundation, but lately I have been trying to find more affordable alternatives. I'm currently using both Clinique Even Better or Maybelline Fit Me . The Mac Paint Pot in Bare Study is dried up (see how it cracked around the edges?) I used this for literally years almost every day as an eyeshadow - it lasts forever. However, I've totally gone off shimmery eye colors so if I bought another Paint Pot, I'd get a matte one. The Essence pigment was a whim purchase a few years ago that I never used. I'm not sure why I felt I needed a charcoal shimmery shadow as I'm not into dark eye looks on me. Maybelline Brow Drama Pomade Crayon was a product I really enjoyed. It is easy to use and made my brows look done without looking over done. I'd definitely consider buying this again after I use up the other four brow products I'm currently using.

Little Loves Lately: August 2014

This summer has been a busy one! I thought I'd dedicate this edition of Little Loves Lately to things that have helped me unwind and re-charge.

1) Starbucks Cool Lime Refreshers

It's treat receipt time! Almost as good as Frappucino Happy Hour (but not quite). These have the caffeine kick of coffee without the coffee taste. Super thirst-quenching! If the barista is nice, they'll put a bunch of lime rings in it. I've needed the energy many afternoons this summer as I've been getting up earlier to work out.



2) Maybelline Bare Escape Nail Polish

This has been my go-to colour this summer. It's really clean looking. I'm all about solid nails right now - I think I made myself sick of nail art for the moment. There's something slightly therapeutic about putting a fresh coat of polish on, and it always makes me feel more pulled-together.

3) My favourite magazines.

Yes, I've been reading my usual fiction this summer, but I've also been enjoying my magazines as well. I'm always curious to hear what other people read - share your picks! I always get 3/$10 every month at Wal-Mart. I always get Instyle and People Style Watch. The third one varies, although it's usually Cosmo (which I've been much more impressed with lately), although the fashion tends to be on the younger/wild side (do I sound like a Granny yet?)

4) My friend introduced me to this wine not long ago and I can't wait to get a bottle for myself! Luckett's Phone Box White is delicious. I'd tried and loved Phone Box Red before, but didn't realize there was a white version. I'm partial to sweet wines (Reisling, Moscato and the like), so if you don't like a fruity sweet wine, I'd pick one of his drier versions (Tidal Bay is lovely).

June Resolution

It's okay to have resolutions six months after the new year right? Has anyone else just gotten used to writing 2014? It's almost half over!

My resolution is to take a work outfit picture at least once per week. I've found a good backdrop and a few co-workers who will tolerate snapping the occasional shot for me (thanks A and M)!

Little Loves Lately 08.10.13

These three things are bringing me joy these days, in no particular order.

My hair stylist has been telling me to try this for years. I finally did. Yes, it's pricey which is why I've been stubborn about not trying it. Whatever the price (around $40 if I remember correctly), you need to use so little of it that I'm sure it will last over a year with weekly use. One thing I found confusing. . . the instructions on the product say to use a teaspoon and the instructions on the website say to use "a generous amount." I'm sticking with the teaspoon, it's enough to coat my hair. It makes my hair really soft and shiny and my co-workers asked me if I just had my hair done after I used it.

Canada has needed a talk show like this for a long time. The Social has four lady hosts, which sounds familiar, but is far more fun than The View in my opinion. The hour-long starts with a segment on hot topics and then usually progresses to guests - sometimes celebrities and sometimes not. I have a serious love for their outfits, and you can find out the brands they are wearing every day on the website.The ladies are not afraid of voicing their opinions, and I adore that the content is relevant to Canada. Totally worth the DVR space.

Maybelline Color Show Polka Dots

Gone are the days of dotting my own nails when I have this polish to do all the hard work for me.

It needs three coats for opacity and lasts almost a week with normal tasks. The bad part... it's murder to get off, as are most glitter polishes. I'll be putting a base coat on next time to see if it helps. I bought this for $2.50 on sale at Superstore. I should have bought the other colors too!

Eye Experiment

Disclaimer: I am not great at make-up application.

I saw this eye tutorial in the November Issue of Glamour and decided to try it out.... and take pictures along the way for everyone's amusement.

I don't have a professional camera, so these shots aren't that clear. Knowing nothing about lighting sure doesn't help either.



Here's the instructions (Glamour, Nov. 2012)

Step 1: The lightest color from my Stila eye shadow trio in Gold Glow was what I used all over the lid.

 

 

 

Step 2: I used MAC eyeshadow in Embark in the crease.

 

 

 

Steps 3 and 4 I lined my eyes with MAC eyeliner in Phone Number.

 

 

 

Step 5: White eyeliner wasn't to be found in my makeup bag, so I used the closest thing I had - Stila Kajal Eye Liner in Topaz. This isn't a color I would have chosen to purchase. It was part of a Sephora gift set.

 

 

 

Step 6: I used Maybelline Mega Plush Volum' Express mascara in Blackest Black (why do they spell "volume" that way???). I wouldn't purchase this again. It flakes.

 

 

Here's the end result.

 

 

 



The lighter of the eyeliners wasn't very visible (and didn't show up at all in the photos). I might pick up a true white eyeliner and try this look again.

CREEPY!

Yes, I know I'm bad at lining and using mascara on the bottom lashes. I never do it, so therefore I am completely inept.

I'm sure no one from Sephora is going to hunt me down to be their newest make-up artist, but this task was kind of fun and I may do another one sometime in the future. It's a good excuse to try different looks.
