Cheers to the Freaking Weekend

Labour Day doesn't feel the same as an adult. I remember when all Labour Day meant to me was that school was starting, and it wasn't something I looked forward to. I didn't totally hate school, but I was much happier spending my days playing in the sun or watching Degrassi and Oprah on rainy days.

With longdistanceloving hosting a link-up for a Labour Day look, I wanted to create an outfit that would work for a warm day. September in Nova Scotia usually has comfortable sunny days and cooler nights.

I love this top, but it's one of my more challenging shirts to style. It's a cropped style and I have a crazy long torso, so I have to choose higher-waisted bottoms.

Details
Shirt: American Apparel
Shorts: Joe Fresh
Sandals: Madden Girl
Sunnies: Coach
Necklace: Stella & Dot
Belt: Old Navy

R and I are going to New Brunswick for a mini-getaway. I hope it's warm enough for the beach!

What are your Labour Day weekend plans?

Little Loves Lately 28.08.13

Welcome to another installment of the simple things that have been making me happy lately. Happiest of all is starting initial wedding plans. No date or venue is set yet, but I did try on a few dresses and it was SO much fun.

I've been scoring great finds at The Body Shop, and I am in LOVE with this hand lotion. It smells so good and sinks into the skin quickly.

The Body Shop Almond Hand & Nail Cream

Lawtons is the greatest store for marking down beauty products. I scored a mini-set of OPI polishes from the Oz The Great and Powerful line for $4.99 a few weeks ago. Lately I've been liking more neutral tones on my nails, which is shocking since I am usually the queen of crazy when it comes to polish choices.

There were four sheer shades and one liquid sand in the collection.

What Wizardry is This?

This was my first experience with liquid sand. The texture looks great (it's on my toes right now) but I'm a bit worried it will be hard to remove.
I Theodora You
A very pretty soft pink. I used two coats, but I think three coats would look best. It was still a bit see-thru.
Don't Burst my Bubble
This is the only one I haven't tried yet. It's an off-white color that will probably need a lot of coats and I haven't had the time to experiment with it.
Glints of Glinda
I think this one is my favorite of the bunch. It doesn't look like much in the bottle, but on the nails, it's a pretty beigey/champagne color

How happy was I to get a great deal on hand soap? R and I stopped at Bath and Body Works a few weeks ago and they had their hand soaps on 10 for $30. Then I asked at the cash if there were any email promos on, and there was a $10 off any $30 purchase. Brilliant!

Ten new smells to add to the six that already live in my bathroom cupboard! My favorite scents of this recent haul are Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin (with a cute Halloween bottle), Sugar Maple, and Vanilla Buttercream. Can you tell I have a sweet tooth???

Sharpen the Pencils

It's Friday! I don't know about you, but all the fall clothes in stores and on-line are making me wish I had a good excuse to go shopping.

There are many perks to being a grown up (cars, legal wine drinking, and no homework) but something about almost-September gives me an ache for back-to-class... but only for the first day, to see how cute your crush got over the summer and to scope out what everyone is wearing.

Teacher's Pet

Topshop grey top / H&M black zipper skirt, $20 / Dolce & Gabbana black ballet flat, $415 / Marc by Marc Jacobs messenger bag, $550 / TWIST'N'SCOUT beaded jewellery / Betsey Johnson pink jewelry / OPI nail polish

I am linking with longdistanceloving on this fabulous Friday for a post on back-to-school fashion.

Oh how I need a new pair of black flats! Seriously, the heel fell off and they're looking rather shabby. Any recommendations? I don't mind spending a bit more, because I wear black flats a lot! The pair that died lasted me four years (thank you Franco Sarto).

Fire Pants

My red denim is a little too tight for casual Fridays at the office so I needed to find another way to work red bottoms into my work week.

Details
Pants: Banana Republic Factory Store
Shirt: Le Chateau
Blazer: Ann Taylor
Shoes: Franco Sarto via Town Shoes
Sunnies: Coach
Watch: Guess

I picked these red pants up on crazy discount. Petite sizing means no hemming needed, which means they're saving me even more money.

What's your favorite bright color to wear to work?

The Monday Currently 08/19/2013

I spent part of Sunday morning at Martinique Beach

What a beautiful weekend we had! I'm linked with siddathornton today for a "hey what's going on with you?" link-up.

CURRENTLY

Reading: Love All by Callie Wright. I'm about 75% done and it's a solid debut novel written from the perspectives of several different family members. I'm also reading fall fashion issues of my favorite magazines - gotta love 3/$10 at Walmart!

Writing: Blog posts and lots of client health information at work. I like being thorough!

Listening to: R sitting across from me, tapping away on computer keys. The birds are chirping... I'll miss those sounds when they leave for warmer climates in the fall.

Thinking: Weighing in on the pros and cons of wedding destinations. All-inclusive down south is so easy and tempting, but there is also the pull of Vegas.

Smelling: My ten new Bath and Body Works hand soaps! Ten for $30 and another $10 off. Superb deal! They have the fall scents out now. Two of my favorites are Vermont Sugar Maple and Sonoma Vineyard Berries. I always try to get my soaps on serious sale because I feel bad buying them (drugstore ones are so much more cost-effective). This haul was guilt-free at $2 a pop.
Wearing: Legging jeans, a tank top, and slippers. Nicole by OPI  in Believe It, Do It (a bright pink) on my nails

Loving:That my BFF and I get to hang out this weekend!

Wanting: My own personal hairstylist for every day.

Needing: Nothing. I'm feeling lucky in life right now :)

Feeling: A bit sleepy. We went to an amazing party on Saturday so it means playing a few days of catching up on rest. Well worth it.

Clicking: Who What Wear - I forgot how great this website is!

Short Girl, Long Dress

You don't have to be tall to pull off a maxi dress... just ask Nicole Richie.

I'm linking with longdistanceloving today for a look that can be worn around town running errands (notice the flats and generous-sized bag).

Dress and belt: H&M
Cardigan: Forever 21
Shoes: Madden Girl
Bag: Coach
Bracelet: Suzy Shier
Necklace: Joe Fresh

This dress is so comfortable and cool for a hot summer day. It's a nice alternative to a short dress, and I'll still be able to wear it into the fall with different footwear and a denim jacket. I feel like I'm in a mad scramble to get one last wear out of my summer clothes. I know that in just a few short weeks, fall will be in the air.

Are you starting to think of transitioning your wardrobe to autumn yet?

Embellished

I love simple shirts with a bit of bling on them - not so much the bedazzled variety, more like the rocker-chic look. This one has been in my closet for a few years and I still look forward to wearing it. The next time I do a closet clean-out, I'm going to challenge myself to put anything I'm not genuinely excited to wear into the giveaway pile. I want to love everything that takes up space in my closet, not just think it's okay.

Details
Shirt: Dynamite
Skirt: Forever 21
Shoes: Aldo
Necklace, earrings, and bracelet: gift
Sunnies: Guess via TJ Maxx

Is your closet due for an overhaul? I try to clean out mine at least once seasonally.

My First Stella & Dot

I was over the moon to learn that I won a Stella & Dot credit from the gorgeous Kate of O My Heart. She blogs from New Brunswick and her style is fabulous.

I struggled with what piece to pick from the Stella & Dot line because they have oodles of baubles that caught my eye. In the end, I decided on the Zoe Lariat because it seemed to be so versitile. It's a long cord that can be worn a few different ways around the neck and can even be wrapped into a multi-strand bracelet!

Blazer: Smart Set
Tee: Joe Fresh
Jeans: Joe's Jeans via Value Village
Shoes: Call it Spring
Bracelets: Forever 21
Necklace: Stella & Dot via O My Heart and Erica MacKinnon (Stella & Dot stylist)

Do you own any Stella & Dot pieces?

Outfit Inspiration: Mint

I love when longdistanceloving makes me think outside the box. For this week's Fridays Fancies link-up, she wanted us to create an outfit inspired by a summer treat. The day I created this post, I was craving a Mint Oreo Blizzard from DQ.

Outfit Inspiration: Mint Chip

Vince tank top, $260 / STELLA McCARTNEY pocket shorts / Banana Republic black and white shoes / Marc by Marc Jacobs shoulder bag / Linea Pelle studded bracelet / Stella & Dot dot jewelry / Michael Kors , $88

I think this ensemble would be perfect for leisurely window-shopping or sightseeing in a new city. The flats are functional but still chic and the bag is hands-free. My biggest rule for city walking is no heels (not even  the most innocent-looking wedges).

What style rules do you swear by for sightseeing?

Lakeside Brunch

If you read Monday's post, you know that R and I had a weekend full of friends and lakes. The second lake we visited was Shortt's Lake, near Brookfield. Our friends hosted brunch at their family's cottage - what a beautiful spot.

Details
Shirt and sunnies: American Eagle Outfitters
Skirt: Old Navy
Flip flops: Roxy
Necklace: Forever 21
Bracelet: Suzy Shier
Nails: Sally Hansen Pacific Blue

The food was soooo amazing. I tried to balance out all the empty calories (hello cinnamon bun cake and candied bacon!) with lots of fruit. I started Beachbody's T25 workout the same day these photos were taken. I'm pretty sure I burned off brunch!

What's your favorite brunch food?

Dockside

R and I had a great long weekend! We hung out with friends at two gorgeous lakes in rural Nova Scotia. The first lake is shown here - Canada Lake close to New Germany.

Shirt: Mavi
Tank and belt: Gap
Sandals and jeans: American Eagle Outfitters
Necklace: Tiffany and Co.
Earrings: What on Earth

Excuse the hair... a day in the sun and breeze makes for a bit of a puffy situation. Trust me, it looked even worse when we got back from speed boating! Ribs, potato salad and a campfire rounded out the day. R and I got a little lost trying to navigate back to Halifax. What did we do before smartphones with Google Maps?

R and I once got really lost when we first started dating -  his GPS sent us on woods roads in New Brunswick where there was no phone reception. The places we were driving were really only fit for all terrain vehicles. His poor Honda! It always makes us laugh when we talk about it though!

Have you ever been truly lost?

Shorty Short Shorts

Being a short legged girl with a crazy long torso, short shorts should be my friend.

Truth: In the post-30 era of my life, I'm so much more comfortable in longer ones.

Shorts: H&M
Shoes: Old Navy
Necklace: Paddy's Market, Sydney AU
Bracelet: Gift

Some of us Canadians are gearing up for a long weekend. The whole country doesn't get this holiday (so sad), and it's a sore spot with those who don't. In Halifax we call it Natal Day and it's a celebration of the province's birthday.

I'm linked with longdistanceloving for a feature post on shorts. Check out what the other bloggers have come up with!

I'm also linked with Tara for summer style today.
