Wine So Fine

If you live near Halifax and haven't been to a Port of Wines Festival, you need to make sure you attend the next one! My first experience with the event was on Friday night, and it did not disappoint. Imagine my delight to enter a huge room with hundreds of wines to taste. Did I mention the cheese plates? Swoon....

Top: Joe Fresh
Skirt: Club Monaco
Bag: Call it Spring
Boots: Nine West
Earrings: Beck & Boosh
Bracelet: Banana Republic

My hair is a bit shorter and the blonde is back, baby!

The outfit was a bit strategic. The flowy shirt and stretchy skirt were so I could eat and drink to my heart's content without worrying about belly bloat. The shoes were one of the more comfy pair of heels I own and had no chance of falling off my skinny feet. The cross body bag (hands free!) allowed me to juggle wine and food at the same time. That is how you dress for a wine show!

My wine buddy for the night had on a super cute jumpsuit from Warehouse in the UK. I wish I'd have gotten a full shot of it, but you can at least see the pattern in the above photo.

I can't begin to list all of the wines I loved from the festival, but one that stuck out in my mind that is local is Bliss by Avondale Sky from Newport Landing, Nova Scotia. It was so fresh and easy to drink!

Army Green

Along with navy blue, army green plays a big part in my closet as an "almost neutral". Yes it's a color, but played properly, can step in to complement almost any outfit.

Details
Vest: Envy
Skirt and sandals: Topshop
Tee: Gap
Bracelet: Beck & Boosh
Watch: Stolen from Hubby (Movado with a Fossil strap)
Necklace: Joe Fresh

Both my tee and my skirt have busy prints, but with the vest breaking up the transition, it tones the outfit down a lot. I wore this to work, but this is the type of outfit you could wear running errands, to a casual dinner, or on a coffee date.
I just want to pull that wrinkle out over my chest...
This is a fun time of year for style. Summer staples can get paired with pops of autumn attire. We've been having a super September here in Nova Scotia. If you have any style questions, feel free to drop me a line at jennifermerlin14@gmail.com . You can also find me on Instagram: jennifermerlin14

Sunday Right Now: 09.20.15

Reading: Just this afternoon, I finished a great read called Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid.  I won't spoil it for anyone who wants to read it, but the book shows two different versions of life that are created by a girl who has to make a decision. It really made me think about how lives can turn out very differently based on choices we make, that at the time, don't seem life-altering. Recently I  read Loving Frank by Nancy Horan, which was recommended to me ages ago (thanks, Rachel!) It was great timing, as the story is about Frank Lloyd Wright, and we just happen to be traveling soon to Scottsdale which is one of the towns he lived in. The ending was shocking!

Writing: Not much in the way of blog posts! I can't explain it any other way except to say I'm feeling uninspired. I'm still into fashion and following blogs, but I'm getting super lazy with actually taking the time to get outfit shots. I'm having no luck with the lighting around our place, which makes the tripod and "run into the shot" game even more challenging than usual.

Clicking: I've fallen in love with Instagram again. More in the way of looking at others pictures and finding new people to follow than actually posting my own. Maybe I'm becoming shy?I've also been browsing random shows and street style photos from NY and London Fashion Week. I watched the Topshop show live this morning. Spring 2016 looks like it will feature lots of polka dots and ankle cropped pants.

Seeing: I'm sitting at the table and loving the new pops of color I can see in the living room. After struggling with the choice of an accent color for months, I finally picked yellow and I'm super happy I did. Grey and yellow look so great together, and I've styled the open concept place in a way that I could easily change the color without too much cost if I get bored of it a few years. Next to do is deciding on wall decor.

Smelling: Dry shampoo that I used earlier today. I'm always on the hunt for the perfect one. This one is far too scented.

Feeling: Frustrated for a number of reasons. I'm blaming most of it on the fact that it has been exactly a month since we've had a fridge that works. The guy came to "fix it" on Friday, after weeks of waiting for a part to arrive. It still doesn't work. We've been surviving out of a bar fridge, which makes it pretty hard to stock up on groceries properly and means I have to cook small portions. I'm also feeling tired. I have a feeling the B12 supplements I've been taking aren't working.

Watching: R was away for a few days (I missed him but I didn't miss his noisy sports shows) and I watched some DVR'ed episodes of The Social and I Am Cait. I've also been watching (and maybe re-watching) all of Justin Bieber's recent media appearances.

Wearing: Jeans, tee, sunglasses on my head. No make up. No jewelry. I'm sticking close to home today.

Hearing: The washing machine in it's third cycle of the day.

Anticipating: Vacation is coming to me in two weeks! I also have a physiotherapy reunion with many of my classmates here in Halifax soon, and am super-pumped to be checking out Scottsdale and all it has to offer.

My vibe today. We've been having a lovely September.

My Monthly Purchases : August 2015

Every month, I break down my clothing expenses and share them. I used to have a monthly budget, but partway through 2014, I switched to a quarterly budget of $500. This can be rolled into the next quarter if it's not all spent. My goal is to keep my out of pocket expenses within $2000 a year. Gifts and gift cards don't count towards my budget.

August is generally a high spending month for me (you know, "back to school shopping"...) but this year I restrained myself.

Top: Lucy & Laurel via Winners
Reg $55 on sale for $16
My closet is lacking in navy shirts. This is simple yet really feminine and pretty. My only beef about it is that I wore it outside one evening and mosquitos flew in the holes and bit my upper arms. Oww. Totally my fault. Should have predicted that! Sorry for the wrinkles - fresh out of the wash!

Tops: Gap
Reg $66 for the three, on sale for $25 for three
I usually buy a few Gap tees late in the summer when they're on sale. They wash well and have a soft and stretchy vibe. The third one is in the wash, but it's a black and white striped crew neck.

Skirt: Club Monaco
Reg $150 on sale for $17.50
A black skirt wasn't on my wish list (I have a few) but this is one of those buys that will definitely get playing time in my wardrobe. Too well-priced to leave in the store! Club Monaco tends to carry timeless stuff, so if you see a great basic, nab it, you'll wear it for years!

Culottes: Envy
Reg $60 on sale for $20
Check out my post on these!

T-shirt: Wilfred Free at Aritzia
Reg $45 on sale for $15
What a pretty color. I can see this being layered under a chunky sweater or blazer this fall. Or.... lounging around the house because it's so darn comfy!

Total value of items: $376
I paid $94.
I saved 75%

That leaves me $298 to spend this quarter, as I'm still dragging out some birthday money. This quarter technically ends at the end of September, but if I don't spend it, I can roll it ahead to the next quarter.

I've been stretching my Joe Fresh birthday gift card to the max! For those of who who haven't wandered in lately, I was there this week... and they have the fall clothing in! Gorgeous stuff this season. I was good and only bought two pieces on Sept 1st (which is the magical day in my head that my budget "re-sets" LOL). I'll share the fall stuff with you next time, but here are the buys I snagged in August.

Shorts: Joe Fresh
Reg $19 on sale for $13
I've weeded a lot of shorts out of my closet lately, therefore needing new ones. These are a nice color and looser fit.

Top: Joe Fresh
Reg $29 on sale for $9
I hope to get a few wears out of this pretty white short sleeve sweater before I spill pasta or something on it....

Did you find any amazing wardrobe additions this month? Do share!
