Posh Peplum

Did you know there were two huge fashion events last weekend?

One was the small show they call the Oscars.

The dresses were gorgeous, but I'd be panicked wearing something like that. My favorite Oscar dress was apparently slaved over for three hundred hours by Louis Vuitton. Bet he'd be super-peeved if someone spilled nacho dip on it. Too much pressure.

Disclaimer: This photo wasn't taken by me. Security wouldn't let me in.

I love orange and I have full intentions of adding something or seven in this shade to my spring wardrobe. Michelle Williams' short hair is so cute. Not loving the pink clutch though.
I always wondered what peplum meant. It's that tutu-like thing around her waist.

Moving right along to the second  (much swankier) fashion event....

Mardi Gras at the Holiday Inn.

R and I were kindly invited to a charity fundraiser for the new hospital in Truro.

I wasn't going to buy something new because I already have a blue dress in my closet that I bought over a year ago with tags still on it that would have been perfect for this type of event.

But then I saw this dress.... and I had a weak moment.

Details
Dress- Dynamite (Halifax)
Shoes- Le Chateau (Dartmouth)
Earrings and bracelet- What on Earth (Dartmouth)
Versa Spa spray tan - Glow de Soliel (Tantallon)

Sorry about the lighting ... the shoes and nails are red.

The decor was impressive and I especially loved this little cafe table photo op.

Sonya and Meaghan got their dresses at Moments boutique in Truro.

I'm sooooo excited for tomorrow! It's hump day AND I get to go to a shopping party with my friend Jenn. Double score.

Going in Circles

Last weekend, I hung out in my hometown. I spent some time with my family, got my hair highlighted at Square Roots, and went to a baby shower. This is what I wore to the baby-fest.

Details:
Circle Scarf: American Apparel (Halifax)
Cardigan: Dynamite (Halifax)
Plain White tee
Leggings: Gift from the states
Boots: Call it Spring (Halifax)

Circle scarves are one of my very favorite things to wear, and I'll dedicate a whole post to them soon. I got this one for $20 (regular $34) as a Team Buy in December. I've barely taken these boots off since I bought them. They're a greigy sort of color and seem to go with absolutely everything. It's hard to see my nails, but they're Sephora Brownie (not sure if they make that shade anymore).

Enjoy the Oscars if that's what you're doing tonight. I think I'll skip the actual awards (I have a new issue of LouLou to read....) and just check out the red carpet stuff. I'll post about my favorite Oscar dress later this week!

Early Exposure

So, I wrote a book. A novel to be exact. It's been about three years in the making, although I put it aside several times for many months without touching it. When I tell people I finished a novel, one of their first questions is, "What made you want to do that?"

I've always had my nose in a book. I'd lug books around the way some kids have a blankie.

Flipping pages while waiting for cake on my 2nd birthday

My parents were exhausted with my constant requests for books to be read to me, so when I was three, they taught me how to read them by myself.

Reading and blending in with the 1982 decor

I went the science route in high school, to the dismay of my English teacher... sorry Pete. So while I spent much time working on chem labs and dissecting frogs, my favorite thing to do was write book reports.

Fast forward 12 years later, when I'm feeling a bit bored and needing a creative outlet. I was in an apartment the size of a matchbox with lots of carpeting, so painting wasn't a good choice. Neither was interpretive dance, due to the glass coffee tables.

I had a vague idea in my head for a main character.... so I grabbed my laptop and started to type. The only outline that ever existed was in my mind (which is a completely sketchy place to store anything).

I think it was inevitable that I would write something someday, given my love for books. I have my family to thank for not replacing the books in my hands for Barbies. (I never really liked her. Well, I had the one with the super long hair but my dog chewed her leg off).

Since this blog is going to be about fashion too, I couldn't resist putting in a shot of me rocking my raingear and a storybook. I still love rubber boots.

Rookie

Add caption

Details:
Earrings: What on Earth (Dartmouth)
Plain white tee
Cardigan: Old Navy (Halifax)
Pants: Lucky Brand cargos (Toronto)
Shoes: Miz Mooz (Toronto)
Scarf: Gift - brand unknown

I wore this to breakfast with R's parents last weekend, and that's as far as I went as two inches of ice covered everything outdoors, including my car. My back passenger door didn't thaw out til Monday.... and it picked a great time to pop open. Inside an underground parking garage at Dal. The alarm went off for a long time. Sorry Dal students and security employees.... oopsie! On the plus side, the battery didn't die!

I look dorky, and I'm not hiding anything behind my back (well, nothing I'm going to tell you about anyway). I hope I'll get better at this whole "acting like I'm not being photographed" thing.

Who's That Glitterary Girl?

Well hey there!
Do we know each other?

Likely yes, if you're reading this in the early days of my attempts at a blog. But I hear these blog things can spread quickly and before you know it your mother's hairdresser's friend's third cousin talks about your blog with her neighbour in line at the grocery store and suddenly you're famous.

That's exactly how it works, right?

I like to talk about things I like. Maybe some of my likes and your likes will overlap and you'll come back to visit. I can't promise you that I'll always write about stuff you're interested in, but I'll give you an idea about what you might find on my blog, and you can decide for yourself if we're going to be soulmates.

Me Likey:

  • Books. I read about as often as I breathe. I kinda wrote a novel too. I'm polishing it to shiny sparkling perfection and soon will be peddling it to agents. I'll likely receive tons of rejections, so the more friends I have through blogging, the better ... helps the self-esteem.
  • Clothes. Anyone who's traveled with me knows that my outfit itinerary is as important as my passport. Every day has a planned ensemble, right down to earrings and socks. My worst nightmare is randomly throwing things in a suitcase and having to wear a brown belt with grey jeans.
  • Yummy things. Including but not limited to: every cheese known to man, chocolate, and DavidsTea. Oh, and every so often I decide to go gluten, sugar, dairy, and red meat-free. Don't talk to me about pizza during these times if you want to be my friend.
  • Travel. There is an empty hole in my life when I don't have a trip planned. I avoid this boring situation as much as possible.
  • Current events. Especially the really important ones like who got kicked off The Bachelor last night and what Aria wore on Pretty Little Liars.

Oh, did you catch on that my name is a clever combination of "glitter" and "literary". Google tells me that I'm not the first one to come up with this word. Oh well.

XOXO.
