Loving Labour Day

Yay -it's the weekend!

I'm taking a much-needed four days off and hope to fill them with friends, fun, exercise, organizing, and tackling a stack of September magazines (huuuuge, especially In Style).

I'm linking up with longdistanceloving for another My Friday's Fancies, featuring outfits to wear for Labour Day.

Details:
Shirt: American Apparel (Halifax)
Tank top: Suzy Shier (Truro)
Jeans: American Eagle Outfitters (Halifax)
Shoes: Old Navy (Halifax)
Bag: Coach (Toronto)
Belt: City Streets (Halifax)
Green Bracelet: The Black Market (Halifax)
Brown Bracelet: random store in Fiji
Necklace: Forever 21 (South Portland)
Sunnies: Coach (TJ Maxx, South Portland)

Nails: Sally Hansen in Mint Sorbet and Turquoise

The day there photos were taken, R and I went to an amazing party at a home right on the ocean. It was one of the best days of the summer for sure! Notice how I switched out my wedges for flip flops (Roxy- Winners, Vancouver).

I hope everyone has a fabulous, fun, and safe Labour Day weekend! See you in September!

Glymm August 2012

Ooh la la!

I like the patterned bag!

Welcome to my August 2012 review of Glymm - a Canadian beauty sample company that sends monthly treats.

The Laundress Delicate Wash. Laundry detergent is sort of like a cleaning product, and while I'm sure it's lovely, not really what I want to get in my beauty bag. Please don't send me a Magic Eraser next month (tee hee).

Atelier Cologne Absolue- Vanille Insensee. I was excited to see this company again, as I loved the other sample from them a few months back. This perfume is another hit! Vanilla, jasmine and lime.

Bentaberry- Creme Hydratante Regulatrice. This face cream was OK, but it was a bit sticky. I used it at night, so I can't really comment on the fact that it's supposed to be mattifying.

Mai Couture Foundation Powder Papier in Fair Glow. I haven't tried this yet but am intrigued. I don't wear foundation often (lazy!) but this is a different way of applying.

Vitamine and Sea Mineral Clay Mask. Wow, we get a lot of masks with Glymm! I don't mind the abundance of masks though, because I know I really should use them more often. This is a product I'll try soon. You can smell the Dead Sea in it!

Naked Princess Naked Shine in Barely Nude. I soooo wish this sample was bigger (like full size!). I really like this gloss. It has "plumpers" in it (hello plush lips), and the color is a great nude. Might be something I spend my beauty points on in the near future!

Overall, I liked most of  the samples and the bag itself, but was a wee bit disappointed that there was no full-sized product this month.

If you'd like to subscribe to Glymm, here's the link.

Chopped

There's always a certain anxiety that comes with a major haircut. Will I like it? Will other people like it? Will I still be able to wear a ponytail?

Yes, this is major for me.
Those extra four inches that used to trail down my back had seen better days, but I was oddly attached to them. Now that they're gone.... good riddance!

Excuse the wrinkles- long car ride

Details:
Dress: Hand me up from cousin H: origin unknown
Shoes: Old Navy (Halifax)
Necklace: Forever 21 (LA)
Earrings: Le Chateau (Halifax)

This dress is so comfy! The bottom is chambray and is easily wrinkled (good thing that doesn't really bother me!)

I haaate ironing. I iron my work pants and stream a lot of shirts and dresses, which is much easier than ironing. How do you guys deal with wrinkles?

Pretty Little Liars Style: Emily (Shay Mitchell)

Emily is the sportiest of the Pretty Little Liars, but she's still super-stylish, and perhaps the most realistic for what a teenager really wears to school.

Here's a classic Emily look.

Source

An article in Teen Vogue lists some stores that the stylists often get Emily's clothes from - American Eagle, Abercrombie & Fitch, Gap, lululemon, and Converse.

Canadian actress Shay Mitchell is a total stunner on the red carpet and off-set. She's far more glamorous than her character!

Source
The printed dress fits her like a glove and looks amazing with her red lips.

Source
This chambray (I love chambray!) dress is slightly more casual but still chic, and the unexpected booties toughen it up just the right amount.

Source
I love this dress (or is it a top and skirt, who knows...it rocks). The shoes, I'm not crazy about. I would have picked nude footwear as I think the pink and orange are bright enough. I just adored the top two-thirds so much, I had to show you.

I hope you're enjoying my Pretty Little Liars style posts! I'm saving my favorite for last.... keep checking back!

Hair Today... Gone Tomorrow

August is a month where I might as well start every outfit post as "sorry... my hair looks like I don't own a brush...."

Details:
Shirt: H&M (Toronto)
Shorts: Gap Factory Store (Halifax)
Shoes: Target (Plainville, Mass)
Necklace: A/X Armani Exchange (NYC)
Watch Guess (Vancouver)
Sunnies: American Eagle (Halifax)

The good news is.... I'll have less hair to deal with when Friday rolls around. I think I'll say goodbye to at least three inches.

I'm really liking Ashley Benson's hair right now.

I'll be sure to blog my new style sometime next week!

Whose hair are you coveting right now?

Novel-Tea: Part 12

Sometimes I'm slow to start books that it seems everyone else finished ages ago.

Dear John is one of those books - even the movie has been out forever...and I haven't seen it yet. Book before movie... ALWAYS.

Source

In true Nicholas Sparks' fashion, the story was quick and easy to read, involved falling in love, and flowed well with respect to both pacing and tears.

My tea of the day is the one that made me fall in love with DAVIDsTEA last year, when I thought I hated tea. This is Butterfly Jasmine. The leaves unfurl into a butterfly shape as it steeps!

The tea leaves are rolled up to look like little cocoons.

The steam fogged up my lens and by the time I snapped the shot, the magical moment was over.

Butterfly jasmine is delicious iced with a little agave nectar.

I found SUCH an appropriate dress to pair with the tea.

This dress was created by Seattle designer Luly Yang. Art in the form of fashion!

Steal my Sunshine

How great was the song "Steal my Sunshine" by Len?

Today I'm linking with longdistanceloving for outfits inspired by sunset. It was a fantastic excuse to buy a new pair of peachy/pinky/coralish jeans!

Details:
Top: Forever 21 (LA)
Jeans: Aeropostale (Halifax)
Shoes: Miz Mooz (Toronto)
Necklace: Smart Set (Halifax)
Earrings: can't remember...
Bracelet: The Black Market (Halifax)

After studying this photo obsessively, I've realized I don't like the necklace with it. Next time I'll pick plain silver or gold.

Excuse the picture quality. This is what happens when my photographer is busy and I have to balance my camera on the ledge in the kitchen.

Have a fabulous weekend!

Fog and Leather

As much as I love the summer, my locks will welcome the arrival of fall and lower humidity.

Fog is defined (by me) as humidity that's visible to the naked eye.

Details:
Jacket: Danier (Halifax)
Shirt: Jacob (Toronto)
Jeans: Calvin Klein (Costco!!! Halifax! $17.99!)
Scarf: Smart Set (Halifax)
Shoes: Cole Haan (Vancouver)
Earrings: I forget (foggy day = foggy mind)

My hair stayed smooth for 30 seconds.

My Lifestyle Lately

If I could sum up the first part of then summer in three words, I'd use: busy, fun, exhausting. In no particular order.

Weddings, bachelorette parties, showers, BBQs, dinners, birthday parties.... in rapidfire sucession.

My lifestyle hasn't left much time for shopping, but on the flip-side, I'm saving money for my retail adventures in San Francisco. October will be grand!

Here are a few small things I've tried lately.

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB. SPF 30

I held out on buying a BB because I don't like wearing a base. I still don't use this BB daily, but it's slowly being introduced to my usual routine. I wear it over my SPF moisturizer. The BB itself contains SPF, but I'd be worried I wasn't applying enough for adequate coverage if I used the BB alone.

It spreads well and blends well and it does seem to blur uneven skin tones. I'm not yet decided if I'll repurchase this or try another brand.

Seche Vite Top Coat
I bought this top coat from Sally Beauty a few months ago and it works well to dry nails a bit faster than your average topper. I'm  not able to be functional any sooner than when I use other stuff though. It just speeds up that REALLY wet time when you can't even flip a magazine page for fear of smearing. I'd repurchase though because I love nothing better than magazine reading while waiting for my nails to dry.

Every single thing I've made from this book so far has been excellent. Okay, it's only been six things, but 6/6 is a great track record. The recipes are easy to follow, and there are interesting and funny facts throughout that give me something to read while I'm waiting for my onions to soften.

Look what I made

This genius DIY bracelet idea is courtesy of the Lauren Conrad website. Check out this link to watch her video.

The ribbon was $0.50 at Wal-Mart (I only used a tiny bit), and the washers were about $2.50 for a box of 40. I've already made these in a few more colors. They literally take 15 minutes to complete.

Mullet Love

I still giggle when I hear these being called mullet skirts. It sounds so much more interesting than high-low skirt.

Details:
Tank: Gap Factory Store (Halifax)
Skirt: Forever 21 (South Portland). Also seen here.
Shoes: Aldo (Vancouver)
Belt: H&M (Vancouver)
Bag: Coach (Toronto)
Necklace: Forever 21 (LA)
Bracelets: Gift, homemade by moi, and Sephora ribbon hair tie

Excuse the hair.

Mental note: When the humidity is in the mid-30's, it's best to take the outfit photo BEFORE wandering around the waterfront for four hours.

What a great day - a visit with my BFF and her family from Toronto, Bud Light Lime on the waterfront, and Cows ice cream. Gooey Mooey = best treat ever.

Scarf: Margolians (Truro)
Shoes: Call it Spring (Halifax)
Jewelery: all gifts

One more wedding to go this summer, and my outfit for that one is yet to be determined.

An Award? For Me? The Liebster.

A huge thanks goes out to Glynis at Librarian Girl for giving me a Liebster Award!

I've been watching these awards make their rounds of the blogging world and crossing my fingers to get one someday!

Liebster Awards are for bloggers who have less than 200 followers. The word "liebster" is German and apparently means kindest, dearest, valued, cute, etc (at least that's what Glynis said.... and I trust her.... she's a librarian).

The rules for accepting the award are:

1. Each person must post 11 things about themselves.

2. Answer the questions the tagger has set for you and create 11 new questions for the people you have tagged.

3. Choose 11 people (with less than 200 followers) and link them in your post.

4.Go to their page and tell them about the award (social networks accepted).

5. If you have not done so yet, follow the tagger and visit at least three nominees.

6. Remember, no tag backs.

Here are 11 things you're just dying to know about me.
1. I'm an only child. My family is tiny but wonderful. R's family is large and wonderful, so I really have the best of both worlds.
2. I like to name my cars. First I had Cecilia the Celica. Now I have Izzy the Impreza.
3. I can twirl my arms 180 degrees when they're hanging by my side, but I learned in physio school that it's not so good to do that.
4. I could watch the Penguin Cam at Seaworld all day long, and I often tune in for a few minutes if I'm having a bad day. I dare you to watch it and not laugh.
5. I had no idea how to style my curls until I was about 25 years old. I used to get perms in high school (hey, it was the 90's) because I had no idea my hair was this curly.
6. I find white shirts and jeans to be one of the most attractive things a man can wear.
7. I didn't even like wine until I lived in Australia. Now, I love it.
8. I once took a 58 hour train ride.
9. I'm a true Nova Scotian and love to eat lobster. I prefer if someone cracks the shell for me.
10. I can't snap my fingers.
11. I'm scared to buy clothes on-line in case they don't fit and I'd have to pay to send them back.

Here are the answers to the 11 questions I was asked by Glynis at Librarian Girl.
1. What was your childhood nickname, if any? I was Jennie until I was six, and then my mom's best friend bought a German Shepherd and named it Jennie. I refused to be called Jennie after that.
2. What is your favourite colour? It changes constantly. Today, cobalt.
3. What inspired you to start a blog? I wanted to get my name out there as I'm trying to get agent representation for my first novel. I quickly realized that I had way more to say about fashion and lifestyle than writing.
4. Do you have a favourite film? What is it? I don't really have a favorite, but if I need a "pick-me-up", I'll throw on Blue Crush.
5. Have you ever done anything scary, such as skydiving? I did a Canyon Swing in NZ. It's the same as a bungee but you swing back and forth at the bottom instead of rebounding.
6. What's your favourite city? Sydney, Australia.
7. Something you are proud of. My education.
8. What are your vices? Nachos, chocolate, Drumstick McFlurries
9. Heels or flats? Flats
10. Can you play a musical instrument? I played the clarinet for one year when I was 11.... so no.
11. What's your favourite sandwich? Lobster
I'm passing the Leibster on to these eleven great bloggers:
Life is Reediculous
MrMrsWalsh
Rose Mode
Chicfully Yours XOXO
KathrynLaine
squeakydolly
Jess Cause
Kayleevz
Understated Classics
Wardrobe Menu

A lot of the above people are ones who I've received lovely comments from. Your time spent networking is very valuable! Thank you so very much for taking the time to visit my blog.

My list of questions for my chosen eleven are:
1) What's a quirky fear of yours?
2) How long have you been blogging?
3) Who is your hero?
4) What's your favorite shade of lipstick or gloss?
5) What is your favorite season?
6) Do you subscribe to any magazines?
7) What is one place you really want to travel to?
8) Household chore you hate the most?
9) Are you an early bird or a night owl?
10) What's your favorite reality show?
11) What store would you like to get a $1000 gift card for?

Wow.... that took a long time.... but it was so great to pass along this award to deserving bloggers and do some networking by visiting new blogs!

Easy Tee-zee

Have no clue what to wear? In a lot of situations, the answer is: denim and white. Please disregard this if your destination is a wedding, the prom, or inside Buckingham Palace (however...it would totally work outside the gates).

T-shirt: American Eagle Outfitters (Halifax)
Skirt: Gap (Halifax)
Scarf: Smart Set (Halifax)

Hat: H&M (Vancouver)

I have a serious love for this cobalt scarf. It's lightweight and perfect for a summer evening. And I love the price too... $2.99 with 30% off!
